If you have a trip to Yosemite National Park in your sights, then you would do well to pick up the recently released bookby Matt Johanson.

Yosemite National Park

I got a small taste of Yosemite last December and it’s a place that left me wanting more.

This book presents loads of adventure ideas across the four seasons .

Suggestions for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are provided. Some of the suggestions are super easy and family-friendly whereas one of the adventures – for the hardy and skilled – can take anywhere from three to six days as you journey 39 miles across Tuolumne Meadows.

Loads of hikes and backpacking trips are included in the book – and as Hans Florine, a speed climber and 30 year veteran of the Yosemite area suggests in the forward, Matt has listed some of the best but also some of the less-frequented areas . That’s the sort of information I know I like to get – a favourite hotspot only a local would know about.

A handful of rock climbing suggestions with difficulties ranging from 5.0 to 5.10 are provided; most are in the 5.7 range. It’s been a while since I’ve been rock climbing, but I do like the way the routes are drawn out on the actual rock face – and then a description provided, pitch by pitch.

Another feature I like are the two maps presented at the beginning of the book showing the location of all 50 adventures. Each map is afforded two pages and all adventures are numbered. It’s very logically presented.

More than 100 colour photographs and another 48 maps (on a much smaller scale) round out the book – and provide lots of visual inspiration to visit. You’ll also find elevation charts and insider tips, where applicable. Matt also tells you how to go about getting a permit to climb Half Dome – something that’s on my bucket list, even with the crowds.

With this book in your hand, the biggest problem you’ll have is deciding where to spend your precious time in Yosemite National Park. It will definitely be coming with me on my next visit.

The book can be purchased on thefor $US19.95 or $CDN 21.95.
